Out Of The Box; a cigar box guitar project
(Middle Mountain Music)
When Like-minded souls get together to collaborate the result often energizes their careers. Guitarists Ben Rice and RB Stone and affection for homemade guitars that are commonly referred to as cigar box guitars, but I’ve been made out of many things including gas cans, washboards, lunchboxes and odds and ends for a body, With a neck and string attached and pick ups WIRED! in. The duo Brought an array of their favorite contraptions to Roseland recording studios in Portland and laid down 11 new tracks of original tunes for Out of the Box: a Cigar Box guitar project, released in March of 2020.
The joyous collection is a free wheeling gumbo of blues, boogie and country stompers. Dave Meylan and Joseph Barton joined the guitar slingers as the rhythm section. The Rockabilly infused duet “Hot Rod Mama” opens the album setting the tone with a classic tail pipe roar. They mix familiar themes of songs about the road and nights in a barroom with timely socio-political commentary. A very nice touch is the listing in the liner notes of which model guitars where used on each track, cigar box aficionados will relish this attention to detail.
Katthy L Rankin did the photo shoot for all pics on the CD at Mt Tabor In Portland.
