Black Top Run

(Mascot/ Provogue Records)

Often virtuosos are pigeon hold into a particular category and the breadth of their talent is overlooked. In the case of Lafayette guitarist Sonny Landreth, he is often referred to as “The slide guitar guy,’ but his new album Black Top Run shows off his skills as a songwriter and vocalist along with that vaunted slide playing.  The ten news songs, released in February of 2020, are a departure from his previous Blues centric album are bolstered by the expressive power of bassist David Ranson, drummer Brian Brignac and multi-talented keyboardist/songwriter Steve Conn. The opening title track is a classic Americana road song and the swampy groove of the instrumental “Lover Dance With Me,” is quite danceable. “Mule”, is poignant morality lesson disguised as a country two step, and he examines the intricacies of as failing relationship on the slow burning “Somebody Gotta Make A Move.” The expensive ballad “Something Grand,” is pure poetry. Landreth covers new ground on the album while also delivering plenty of pyrotechnics for his legion of fans.
